Profile

Leon Clarke

Leon Clarke was born into an extended family of artists - painters, actors, singers, dancers and more. From an early age he resisted the almost overwhelming impulse to take his place amidst these flamboyant, outgoing people. For twenty years he enjoyed his status as the black sheep of the family. Much to the ongoing chagrin of his operatic father, Leon enjoyed physics more than the stage.

True, there were some concessions made to his artistic heritage. Leon played the trombone in numerous orchestras and bands. He even enjoyed playing in a swing band, the much maligned 'Dr Swing', for many years. This was to be the first step in his headlong plunge into a world of creativity and swing music from which he would never look back.

February of 2000 proved to be a fateful month for Leon Clarke. He attended his first swing dance class under the watchful eyes of Scott and Claudia. That day he felt something deep within himself that had lain dormant for many years. The class wasn't just an uncoordinated attempt at Balboa - it was the reluctant acceptance of a legacy.

Leon has since enjoyed every aspect of the swing scene; he likes the moves, music, clothes and especially the people. He remembers distinctly the feeling of envy and determination he experienced early on whilst watching more accomplished dancers. Thus, it was some time before the self-confessed 'dance-virgin' would allow others to see him perform at a Rave. Sibling rivalry also plays a part in Leon's dancing. His younger sister, Noni, is fast maturing into a uniquely funky swing dancer (and his Mum has even had a go too!).

Swing Patrol are thrilled to have such a great personality as Leon on the team... apart from winning many dance competitions over the years...Leon is well reknown for his great improvisation and useage of the music with his dancing. A great asset to our teaching team!
