Keith Hsuan
Like so many other people in the swing scene, Keith was dragged along to his first class by one of his friends, assuring him that it'd be great fun. Skeptical at first, his reluctance soon turned to joy when realised that swing dancing would allow him to hear awesome music and dance to great tunes. Initially taking classes at Monash University in 2004, he was a slow starter, taking only the one beginner class each week during semester for that year. Quiet and reserved by nature, it took him a while to hit the social floor, but the seed had been planted, and it wasn't long before the addiction took hold; he was soon volunteering at MLX, taking classes at Swinburne, and becoming part of the furniture at Funpit.
Discovering a hidden passion for performing, Keith joined Brat Pack in 2006, where he could satisfy his new-found thirst. He also credits that year as the period where he was able to improve his dancing, and where he experienced many of his highlights so far in his swing career, including the infamous trip to Bendigo for the Australian Federation Tattoo. Since then, he has joined Scat Pack, and the SP teaching team, giving him the opportunity to share his love of dancing to others.
Something of an all-rounder, he enjoys all forms of swing dancing, but has a particular soft spot when the music gets fast and lively, busting it out with charleston, lindy or even bal on occassion. However, when the music is fast and pumping, that's the best time for swing's signature aerials - when people are flying, it's almost guaranteed that Keith will be near by (if you don't believe it, check out the Rugcutters MLB routine from 2007!). On those occasions where you don't see him on the dance floor, chances are he's behind the DJ desk, spinning some of his favourite old school swing tunes from Artie Shaw, Sidney Bechet, Benny Goodman and countless others.
Keith also likes to mix it up outside the swing world - in his time away from dancing, he's either finishing off a doctorate in astrophysics, or propping up a scrum for his beloved rugby team. He's even known to be seen moonlighting for a choir or two around the town. Ever keen to have new experiences, make sure you ask him for a dance whenever you see him around town - he's itching to get on the dance floor!
